The invention features a novel gene, CRX, which encodes a retinal-specific transcriptional activator protein. Mutations within the CRX gene are responsible for cone-rod dystrophy, a retinal degenerative disease. The invention features methods for the detection of CRX mutations, and for the prevention and treatment of retinal degenerative diseases influenced by the CRX gene.

By the first half of the 20th century, new tools were created to view and measure invisible radiation for a more complete picture of the Universe. Rockets developed after World War II allowed a variety of space telescopes dedicated to scanning the sky in each spectral waveband.Meanwhile, bigger and more powerful ground-based telescopes continued to be developed.

Iron oxide colloidal nanomagnets generate heat when subjected to an alternating magnetic field. Their heating power, governed by the mechanisms of magnetic energy dissipation for single-domain particles (Brown and Néel relaxations), is highly sensitive to the crystal size, the material, and the solvent properties. This study was designed to distinguish between the contributions of Néel and

In the middle of July 2018, I saw what I thought was an enormous moth. Turns out it was a Copper Underwing (Amphipyra pyramidea) one of the many Noctuidae, or owlet moths, and apparently not nearly as big as hundreds of other species, but impressive to my eye nevertheless.I took a photograph, although never saw its copper-colored rear wings which were covered the whole time by its mottled and

According to Friedman, “science increases our understanding of the world by reducing the total number of independent phenomena that we have to accept as ultimate or given" (Friedman 1974, 15). Hence, a theory is genuinely explanatory if it helps reduce the number of brute facts that we must posit.
